The reigning champions controlled possession for the majority and looked dangerous throughout the first half.

Liverpool were able to weather City's sustained attack but had few chances to go forward as the half progressed
Liverpool had a stellar chance in the 17th minute when Mohamed Salah connected with Sadio Mane streaking down the middle on a counter-attack.

Mane's strike bounced off the post, and defender Aymeric Laporte's initial attempt to clear the ball bounced off Ederson and back toward the goaline. John Stones quickly recovered and booted the ball out the net, just out of reach of an outstretched Salah.

City reached the scoreboard five minutes before the break when Bernardo Silva weaved around Liverpool's defence along the left side and found Aguero outside the six-yard box.

The Argentine blasted the ball from a difficult angle into the roof to the goal, his seventh league goal in as many home appearances against the Reds.

Firmino got an equaliser in the 64th minute for Liverpool, when Andrew Robertson looped a pass across the goal line for the easy header.

But the home side answered in the 72nd minute. Raheem Sterling found space at midfield and connected with Sane darting up the flank, who smashed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
