EPL: Man City Thrash Burnley 5-0 To Delay Liverpool Title Celebration

Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden both scored twice as Manchester City thrashed Burnley 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night.
The match was tainted by a vile incident just post-kickoff, as a plane with a banner that read “White Lives Matter Burnley” flew over the stadium moments after players from both teams took a knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. But Burnley issued a statement during the game condemning the actions of those responsible.

Pep Guardiola handed Foden a rare English Premier League start. And it took only 22 minutes for the English player to score the opener before Mahrez scored a quick double just before the break to put City in control.

The Algerian's fine solo effort made it 2-0 before he added another from the penalty spot after Ben Mee was penalised for catching Sergio Aguero on the foot following a VAR review.

David Silva added another shortly after the restart before Foden rounded things off with a close range finish to make it a third successive 5-0 win against Burnley at the Etihad in all competitions.

City, who are now on 63 points, will play Chelsea on Thursday before meeting Liverpool on July 2.

Burnley’s 39 points remain 11th and the Clarets remains three points back of the Europa League places.

Tonight's result means Liverpool cannot now officially seal the English Premier League title when they host Crystal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday.
